Intel originally implemented "Mode Based Execution Control" in its 7th generation Kaby Lake CPUs, while AMD offers the equivalent in Zen 2 (Ryzen 2000) and higher cores. While MBEC and its equivalent are not the required hardware component in VBS, a pretty large part of it seems to be in VBS. You can see this in the results below, where the 2 to 3 percent performance penalty on 7th generation chips and higher is almost within the margin of error. From Skylake CPUs of the 6th generation or older, the performance then drops suddenly: Intel originally implemented "Mode Based Execution Control" in its 7th generation Kaby Lake CPUs, while AMD offers the equivalent in Zen 2 (Ryzen 2000) and higher cores. High
performance loss with older CPUs
A performance loss of 15 to 10 percent with the older CPUs
may seem insignificant - but it is not! Sure, the calculators are still usable,
but keep in mind that those older laptops aren't exactly racing today, as you
can see from the raw WebXprt 3 results below. Even in what we'd call a
lightweight, browser-based benchmark, a 6th Gen Core i7 Skylake laptop offers
half the performance of a modern 11th Core i7 Tiger Lake laptop, the current
notebooks don't shine by turning on either VBS getting slowed down. Calculators

Is the VBS performance of older laptops enough to go from
slow to cumbersome? That's up to the individual user, but we can certainly see
why Microsoft is concerned about offering Windows 11 for at least a 2015-era
PC.
